The event saw an overall increase on last year of over 25% for both attendees and exhibitors, with participants from over 40 countries!
László Andor, Member of the European Commission and responsible for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, closed the Conference.
Coming directly from the 2012 Annual Growth Survey press conference, to which he had been called by President Barroso, Commissioner Andor highlighted three key issues requiring urgent political action: the rise in long-term unemployment - 43% of unemployed people across the EU have been job seeking for over a year; the fact that the recent recovery in employment has only been in temporary and part-time jobs, placing more and more people in a precarious situation; and the rapid growth in youth unemployment, raising once again in Europe the spectre of a wasted generation.
The priorities: measures that can bring a job-rich recovery by promoting business creation; dealing with the consequences of demographic ageing - pension reform hand-in-hand with enhanced labour market capacity to attract and keep older workers; greater protection for those facing poverty, with the promotion and implementation of social protection systems and active inclusion strategies; and a focus on young people, particularly those in neither employment nor education or training, with the development of dedicated national youth-employment action plans in all Member States.
